Adoption process

Every placement should be a good match for both the animal and the person offering care. That is why the process should be careful, supportive, and honest about the needs of the animals in care, as well as the realities of the home being considered.

How our rehoming process works

If there is one of our dogs that you have fallen in love with and you want to make it part of your family, what will happen now?

  1. APROP will ask you to complete a form so that we can find out about the new living situation for the dog. You can access this form here or by clicking the “Adopt” button at the bottom of each dog’s listing.
  2. APROP will then do a home-check to see if where you live is suitable for our dog.
  3. If all is well a pre-adoption contract is then signed. This is a trial period of usually 2 weeks for you and the dog, to see if you are suited for each other.
  4. After a successful trial period the final adoption contract is signed, you have found yourself a new family member.

Pre-requisites for adoption

  • You have to be of legal age and you will have to identify yourself with proof of identity (DNI, NIE, NIF, Passport).
  • If the dog you adopt is not yet neutered (in case of adopting a puppy), you are obliged to have this done as soon as medically possible.
  • Signing the adoption contract means:
    • You look after the dog in the most optimal way and to provide it with quality food, exercise, education, time, shelter, space, etc. Give your dog all the veterinary care it needs.
    • You do not use it for reproduction or breeding.
    • You inform APROP about all changes related to the dog (change of contact details, if the dog is lost or has died, etc.)
    • You will take the dog back to the shelter if you can’t take care of it anymore and will not abandon it.
    • You accept that an APROP representative will follow up to see how the dog is settling into his new house.

How our rehoming process works

Our aim is to match the right cat with the right people so that everyone is happy.  We do that by having a conversation with you to find out your lifestyle and the environment in which the cat will live.  We can advise you on what cats may be most suitable for you.

So, once you have decided on a cat to become a new member of your family, what happens next?

  1. You will be asked to bring in a cat carrier to transport your new cat home.
  2. You will be asked to sign an adoption contract.
  3. You will be asked to make a donation which will vary depending on the age of the cat or kitten as a contribution towards some of our costs, plus anything in addition that you would like to donate.
  4. As it is now a legal requirement that all cats are ID chipped, you will be asked to take the cat to a vet to have this done asap if the cat does not already have an ID chip, or to have the legal owner on the ID chip changed from APROP to your own information at the earliest opportunity.
  5. You will take your new family member home.

    • You agree to communicate with the volunteers who may want to follow up on the progress of the cat in its new home.

Street cats

APROP also cares for a small colony of feral cats that live outside our shelter. Every year we help people who care for local colonies of feral cats to help capture and sterilise them. This is done with the support of the local vets and the Pego Ayuntamiento who provide funding for this.
